"Liberal" Media Censors Liberal Church

[Updated]

The United Church of Christ has their new ad, which CBS and NBC have refused to air because they claim it's controversial. Here's their press release.

CLEVELAND -- The CBS and NBC television networks are refusing to run a 30-second television ad from the United Church of Christ ...

The ad, part of the denomination's new, broad identity campaign set to begin airing nationwide on Dec. 1, states that -- like Jesus -- the United Church of Christ (UCC) seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.

According to a written explanation from CBS, the United Church of Christ is being denied network access because its ad implies acceptance of gay and lesbian couples -- among other minority constituencies -- and is, therefore, too "controversial."

This is interesting for a number of reasons: It's part of the media's continuing suppression of the fact that there are millions and millions of white Christians who are liberal. It's a reminder that CBS and NBC, despite claims to the contrary, are right wing. Most interesting of all, it's a nice, ad -- quite Christian, in the most positive of ways.

Josh Marshall, bless his soul, is hammering on this, and has this report on what CBS's spokesman says their policy is. Essentially, they claim that they don't run any advocacy ads on matters of active public debate.
